Opera on Tour!

Raise Your Voice Tour

Engaging Oklahoma’s kids through storytelling and opera is the focus of Tulsa Opera’s Raise Your Voice Tour initiative. A thrilling journey through the world of opera allows thousands of students across Oklahoma, and more than 4,000 second graders in 51 Tulsa elementary schools, to experience music, drama, art, and dance in one onstage spectacle. Raise Your Voice Tour brings opera up close and personal in an interactive performance.

Raise Your Voice Tour schools receive lesson plans and teaching materials that educators can use in their classrooms. In addition to our visits to area schools, we are honored to bring this opera program to Tulsa’s second graders through the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child initiative.

Opera on Tour!

Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World

Music by Joe Illick
Libretto by Mark Campbell
Sung in English and Spanish
Adapted from the book Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World by Laurence Anholt
Commissioned by Fort Worth Opera
By arrangement with Barbara Hogenson Agency, Inc.

This 45-minute interactive children’s opera tells the story of Mariana, a young girl living in the heart of Mexico City. She is encouraged by her family to visit Frida Kahlo and have her portrait painted by the renowned artist but is terrified at the thought. There are rumors that Frida keeps skeletons above her bed, and people have even said that she is a witch. As Kahlo begins to paint Mariana’s portrait, her fear quickly disappears, and a friendship blooms between the two. Mariana meets Frida’s husband, Diego Rivera, and learns of the horrible accident that almost killed her new friend. Through the magic of opera, Mariana and Frida’s story unfolds, and even the audience is invited to join in on the fun.

This opera is recommended for children in grades K-3. Participating schools will receive a teacher resource guide in early 2024 to prepare their students for the opera.
