From The New Yorker, Opera On the Plains, Oct. 31, 2011 by Alex Ross
“Tulsa’s current season opened with The Barber of Seville.  Taking the lead female role of Rosina was the soprano Sarah Coburn…she has already won international notice for her appearances in bel-canto repetory…she sings with fundamental beauty of tone and pinpoint coloratura agility, adding tasteful embellishments and effortlesssly reaching to high C and above.  ….Most impressive was the fluid, idiomatic playing of the orchestra, under the direction of Kostis Protopapas, who has served as Tulsa’s artistic director since 2008.  In any city, it’s rare to find a conductor who sets the right tempo so consistently, in scene after scene, that you stop noticing he is there.”

About the Story…

Deception, disguises and a sprinkle of trickery stir up the town of Seville at the hands of its most famous barber, Figaro. With Figaro’s help, Seville’s very eligible bachelor, Count Almaviva, succeeds in wooing the beautiful Rosina and pries her away from the clutches of her elderly guardian, the cantankerous Dr. Bartolo. It’s a lively love affair and the most hilarious comedy in opera!

Sung in Italian with English supertitles
