Lucia di Lammermoor

LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR

About the Story...

Loosely based on Sir Walter Scott’s historical novel, The Bride of Lammermoor, Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia gives us the tragic tale of love, family politics, madness and murder in 17th-century Scotland. When a young woman is forced to give up the love of her life and marry a man she does not love, soul-chilling horrors ensue…

For countless opera lovers the world over, our 2009 - 2010 season opener – “the ultimate romantic opera” – is simply synonymous with bel canto at its soaring best. In the title role, some of opera’s greatest sopranos have brought audiences to their feet in wild applause with spectacular, show-stopping displays of acrobatic coloratura artistry. Expect nothing less from the stars of our own 2009 Lucia, returning from their triumphant Tulsa Opera debuts: Sarah Coburn – whose ravishing Lakmé dazzled audiences in 2008 – and the acclaimed tenor Scott Piper, Don Josè in our 2007 Carmen.

About the Music...

“It has pleased me very much, if I can believe in the applause and the compliments I have received. I was called out many times, and a great many times the singers, too... Every number was listened to in religious silence and spontaneously hailed with shouts of Evviva!

–Gaetano Donizetti on the 1835 premiere of Lucia di Lammermoor, in a letter to Giovanni Ricordi

Excerpts from the music: Quando, rapito in estasi

Verranno a te sull'aure

Hai tradito il cielo e amor
